This closed electron drift plasma accelerator comprises an annular ionization chamber 2, an acceleration chamber 3 on the same axis as the ionization chamber 2, an annular anode 7, a hollow cathode 8, a first DC voltage source 82, an annular gas manifold 11, a magnetic circuit, and magnetic field generators. A coaxial annular coil 24, which is placed in the cavity of the ionization chamber 2 and is provided with a bias conductive coating connected, together with the conductive material 9 of the inner side of the wall 52 of the ionization chamber 2, to the positive electrode of a second voltage source 85 the negative electrode of which is connected to the anode 7, constitutes an additional magnetic field generator which together with the other magnetic field generators, forms a magnetic field having a magnetic line of force 27 with an "X" point 4 corresponding to a magnetic field zero situated between the coaxial annular coil 24 and the anode 7.
