Abstract:

To provide the coding method for image data with a high efficiency by minimizing discontinuous point by each block scanning so as to reduce block distortion.

Original image data 10 consisting of blocks each consisting of N×N picture elements are given to a coding section 100, quantized at first by a quantization section 101 and scanned in a scanning section 103 while scanning direction is inverted in the unit of tows (row direction) in this block. Then image data with linear arrangement are entropy-coded as well known by an entropy coding section 104 and the result is outputted to an image memory 200.
