The color wheel (color filter) 13 provided to the projector has a region (second white region) of ND-W which transmits white light at the transmittance lower than that in a region (first white region) of W in addition to respective color regions of RGB and the W region. The number of the gradations of the projected image can be increased without increasing the number of bits of a control signal of the image device similarly to the case where the filter of ND-G is used. The visual recognition of the difference in the tint of the transmitting light is difficult in the region of W and region of ND-W transmitting the white light, and therefore, the change and variation in the tint of the projected image can be suppressed.
