An undercarriage 2 is placed above a travelling apparatus 3; a reaping apparatus 4 to harvest a standing culm is placed in front of the undercarriage 2; a plurality of pick-up devices 14 to pick up culms is placed in front of the reaping apparatus 4, and a variable speed gear 15 to vary the driving speed of the pick-up devices 14 is placed at the base part of a supporting cylinder 21a supporting the reaping apparatus 4 in a vertically movable manner and transmitting the rotary power of an engine 10 to the reaping apparatus 4. The combine is further provided with a variable speed transmission case 16 containing the variable speed gear 15 and having an elliptic cross-section by axial view.
