PURPOSE: To prepare a novel composite hydrophilic membrane having high flexibility and oxidation resistance, and reduced areal swelling tendency in an aqueous solution, by reinforcing a hydrophilic membrane obtained by introducing sulfone group to an ethylenic copolymer, with a microporous membrane.
CONSTITUTION: The objective membrane is prepared by (1) laminating (A) one or more films composed of the resin composition containing one or more ethylenic copolymers obtained by the copolymerization of ethylene with a monomer of formula[R1 is H or CH3; R2 is OCOR3, COOR4 or OH (R3 is 1W5C hydrocarbon group; R4 is H, 1W6C hydrocarbon group, alkali metal, or other ions capable of forming salt with carboxylic acid group)]and (B) one or more reinforcing materials composed of microporous membranes of e.g. an ethylenic (co)polymer, and (2) reacting the laminate with a sulfonating agent.
USE: Cation exchange membrane or a diaphragm for methanol fuel cell.
