To provide a production process for a composite nitride phosphor in a finely powdered form which exhibits a high light emission intensity and can be fired at a low cost.
The production process for the composite nitride phosphor containing a very small amount of oxygen represented by general formula (I), comprises firing a powder of mixed raw materials containing a simple substance and/or a compound of an activating element M1, a nitride of a divalent metal M2, a nitride of a trivalent M3 and a nitride of a tetravalent metal M4. The powder of mixed raw materials is set to have a bulk density of 0.05 g/cm3 to 1 g/cm3, and fired at a temperature of 1,200°C to 1,750°C, and the total molar number of oxygen in the raw material to be fired is set at 1% to 20% of the total molar number of nitrogen and oxygen in the raw material. Formula (I): M1aM2bM3cM4dNeOf. (wherein 0.00001≤a≤0.15, 0.5≤b≤2, 0.5≤c≤2, 0.5≤d≤2, 1.5≤e≤6, 0<f≤1.2, and 0<f/(e+f)≤0.2).
