Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a composition useful for controlling or adjusting the biodegradability of cellulose by using a 2-imidazolidinone derivative as the constituent.

CONSTITUTION: This composition contains a 2-imidazolidinone derivative preferably comprising a compound of formula I [R1 and R2 are each H, a (substituted) lower alkyl group or a group of formula II (r is 1 to 3); and R3 and R4 are each a lower alkyl or lower acyl group] and is reacted with a cellulose for use. The 2-imidazolidinone derivative is dissolved or dispersed in a polar or nonpolar solvent to give the composition having a concentration of the derivative therein of preferably 10-60wt.%. The reaction of the composition with a cellulose can be performed by means of dry or moist heat at a room temperature or by heating, preferably in the presence of a catalyst. The amount of the 2-imidazolidinone derivative for realizing the control of biodegradability of a cellulose is preferably 5 to 50wt.% of the cellulose. For example, this composition is used for the production of a carrier for immobilizing microorganisms.
