To provide the subject new compound that bears (trifluoromethoxy) alkyl group and is useful as an electrooptical liquid crystal display material.
This compound is represented by formula I [ring A to ring D are each a (substituted) 1,4-phenylene or the like; J to L are each a single bond, -CH2CH2- or the like; (l) is 1-20; (m) and (n) are each 0 or 1; R is a 1-16C alkyl, an alkoxy or the like] typically trans-4-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-trans-4'- trifluoromethoxymethyl-bicyclohexane. The compound bearing the group of formula I is prepared by reaction of dithiocarbonate of formula II (R' is a lower alkyl) with a fluoride ion, for example, tetrabutylammonium dihydrogen trifluoride or the like) in the presence of a halonium ion generator (for example, N-iodosuccinimide). The compound of formula II is prepared by reaction of an alkanol of formula III in the presence of a strong base in carbon disulfide followed by alkylation (with an alkylating agent).
