Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the starting performance of an internal combustion engine by providing a technique of quickly increasing engine speed at a start-up in a compression ignition type internal combustion engine comprising a variable valve system capable of varying the opening and closing timing and/or lift of an intake valve so as to increase a compression end temperature at a start-up and under a low load.
SOLUTION: The compression ignition type internal combustion engine 1 comprises the variable valve system 100 capable of varying the opening and closing timing and/or lift of the intake valves 20 so as to increase a compression end temperature at a start-up and a low load operation and reduce pumping loss under a high load. In a given period within a period from a start-up start to a start-up end, the variable valve system 100 is controlled for reduced pumping loss to lower cranking torque of the internal combustion engine.
