To provide a container terminal allowing a carriage to smoothly move between two parallel traveling passages and capable of improving efficiency of cargo work and reducing electric power consumption, and a method of controlling the container terminal.
A container terminal includes: an outgoing passage 11 and a return passage 12 located adjacent to a storage lane 2 in which a container is stored and extending in the longitudinal direction of the storage lane 2; a cart 9 self-propelling in the outgoing passage 11 and the return passage 12; a conveyor 13 arranged between the outgoing passage 11 and the return passage 12; and traverse gears 14a, 14b making the cart 9 traverse each of the outgoing passage 11 and the return passage 12. A traverse rail 20 coming into contact with the traverse gears 14a, 14b and the conveyor 13 and suspending a clearance between the traverse gears 14a, 14b and the conveyor 13 is installed on the lower face of the cart 9.
