In this containment provided with a cylindrical vessel 1, and the basket 2 for forming lattice-like storage sections 4 by partitioning a cylindrical cross section of the cylindrical vessel with partitioning walls 3 comprising a neutron absorbing material, formed with water gaps 5 by duplicating the partitioning walls 3 in portions where the storage sections 4 are adjacent to each other, and for storing the PWR type spent nuclear fuel assemblies, each water gap a2 in a peripheral part of the cylindrical vessel 1 is made narrower than each water gap a0 in the central part of the cylindrical vessel 1 to select the optimum dimension in critical prevention view point, in response to a position of the water gap, and an effective critical prevention effect is ensured thereby to reduce a size of the cylindrical vessel 1.
