PURPOSE: To continuously produce polycarbonate in an excellent phase separation and a high conversion ratio by reacting a diphenol and phosgene under a specific condition through continuously combining and mixing together an org. and an aq. reaction phases in a fluidization tube.
CONSTITUTION: The steps and conditions to continuously produce polycarbonate comprises (A) mixing an alkaline water phase which contains a mixture of water and a diphenol, with an org. solvent phase contg. a polycarbonate solvent and phosgene in a fluidization tube, (B) adjusting a vol. ratio of the alkaline water phase and the org. phase to form a water-in-oil emulsion during phosgene reaction in an excess of phosgene by at least 20% to the moles of the diphenol, (C) controlling a residence time to be at least 3 seconds in the fluidization tube, (D) supplying additionally the diphenol-contg. water within 20 min just after its residence time and after starting to esterify with phosgene and making a phase transition of a water-in-oil to an oil-in-water by reducing the excess of phosgene to below 15 mol.%, (E) adding a catalyst after completion of the reaction of the diphenol introduced in the (D) step, and (F) separating, washing and finishing the org. phase.
