In the case of fuel injection from a fuel injection valve 4, this control device is constituted so that it can be changed over compression stroke injection mode control in which fuel is injected during the compression stroke so as to perform stratified combustion, and suction stroke injection mode control in which fuel is injected during the suction stroke so as to perform uniform mixture combustion, according to the operating condition of the engine. At operating the engine, at first an ECU 70 sets a target load value according to accelerator opening information, and in addition, sets parameters for controlling engine output correlated with fuel property and the degree of generation of knocking. Next, correction based on the parameter values to changeover of the mode based on the target load value so as to compensate change of engine output before and after changeover of the mode.
