This control device 1 for the internal combustion engine 3 for controlling the internal combustion engine 3 having a plurality of cylinders #1 to #4 detects fuel ignition timing in the first cylinder #1 as actual ignition timing CAFM (Step 23), sets reference ignition timing CAFMM in the first cylinder #1 in accordance with detected operating conditions NE, PMCMD of the internal combustion engine 3 (Step 12), estimates the cetane number CET of fuel based on comparison results of the actual ignition timing CAFM and the reference ignition timing CAFMM (Steps 14, 15), and maintains fuel amount QINJ#1 supplied to the first cylinder #1 of predetermined amount QREF during the estimation of the cetane number CET (Step 5).
