To provide a control device of an internal combustion engine capable of surely preventing oxidation reaction of fuel in a fuel reforming catalyst, and capable of surely suppressing deterioration of the fuel reforming catalyst.
The fuel reforming catalyst 26 is provided in the halfway of EGR passages 32 and 36 of the internal combustion engine 10. Reforming fuel is injected into EGR gas by a reforming fuel injection device 34. The fuel reforming catalyst 26 generates reformed gas including a combustible component by reforming and reacting the EGR gas with the reforming fuel. During execution of reforming operation, an air fuel ratio of cylinders of the internal combustion engine 10 is all controlled to be in a rich air-fuel ratio equal to or less than a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio. Before starting reforming operation, it is preferable to perform EGR operation without reforming in the rich air-fuel ratio.
