To quickly start an internal combustion engine without causing pre-ignition in automatic restart of the internal combustion engine.
This device includes a throttle valve and a variable lift mechanism capable of control continuously increasing and reducing lift quantity of an intake valve, executes automatic stop for stopping ignition operation of the internal combustion engine when a vehicle stops, and rewindwhen the vehicle starts. Lift quantity of the intake valve is controlled to a prescribed start lift quantity or greater (step S25), and throttle opening is controlled to a prescribed start throttle opening or less (step S26), before start of the internal combustion engine accompanying automatic restart. For example, with respect to the demand for quick rise of engine speed by accelerator operation of a driver during automatic restart, the internal combustion engine can be stably and quickly started without causing pre-ignition by increasing throttle opening.
