To reduce and avoid occurrence of minute movement at a bearing portion of a control shaft due to elastic deformation of a peripheral structure including the control shaft itself and generation of fretting wear as a result, when mechanically and continuously holding a rotating position of the control shaft by a holder.
This control device includes: a link row constituted of a plurality of links 21, 22 linking a piston 14 reciprocating inside a cylinder 12 with a crank pin 17 of a crankshaft 16; the control shaft 23 whose rotating position is changed and held by a drive part 33; and a control link 25 linking the control shaft 23 with the link row. A piston stroke is changed according to the rotating position of the control shaft 23. A target compression ratio is set according to an engine operating state. During a normal operating state at a low compression ratio, oscillation control for oscillating the control shaft 23 in the rotating direction within a prescribed allowable deviation region including the target compression ratio is performed.
