When the intake valve close timing IVC is advanced before bottom dead center BDC at beginning of acceleration, the advancement is delayed in a period before intake pipe pressure PB reaches threshold PBSL. The intake pipe pressure PB is increased by delaying advancement of the close timing IVC. Even if the close timing IVC moves to advance direction reducing cylinder filling efficiency ηv, that is advancement under relatively high intake pipe pressure PB condition and torque response in acceleration is improved.
