PURPOSE: To automatically carry out the end setting of the second sheet by completely discharging the first sheet after finishing the recording of the first sheet and, then, reversely feeding the second sheet and detecting the front end thereof and, after that, carrying out the end setting of the second sheet.

CONSTITUTION: The distance between a sheet sensor 20 and a defined position P in the vicinity of a recording head 4 is defined as A, the distance between the defined position P and a discharge roller 10 is defined as B, and a tangential distance for further rotating the discharge roller 10 in order to completely discharge a sheet 5 after the rear end thereof passed the discharge roller 10 is defined as C. After finishing the recording of the first sheet 5 (at this time, the rear end of the first sheet and the front end of the second sheet are placed, e.g., in a position P), a feed roller 7 and the discharge roller 10 are further normally rotated by a distance B+C to completely discharge the first sheet 5. After that, the roller 7 and the roller 10 are reversely rotated by a distance A+α (α=a small amount) to reversely feed the second sheet 5 until the front end thereof is positioned on the upper course side of the sensor 20 and, then the end setting of the second sheet 5 is carried out.
