To provide a controller for vehicle, capable of deciding up slope and suppressing backing-down of a vehicle, even for a vehicle which is not equipped with a solenoid valve or a car navigation system.
If a vehicle is brought into an idle stop state and stops, backing-down suppressing control is carried out. If the vehicle is brought into idle stop state, the lock-up clutch of a torque converter 5 is engaged (steps S12 and S13). If the vehicle thereafter is brought out of idle stop state, it is decided whether the number N of revolutions of an engine 1 and a motor 3 is smaller than a predetermined number Na of revolutions (step S14). Further, it is decided whether the vehicle is positioned on an up slope, according to whether the motor 1 has rotated in the reverse direction of rotation (step S15). If the vehicle is positioned on an up slope, the motor 1 is caused to produce a positive torque, and thereby backing-down of the vehicle is suppressed via the engaged lock-up clutch (Step 16).
