Abstract:

To detect certainly that the rotating direction of a crankshaft is reversed.

The crank angle detector of an internal combustion engine includes a rotor having a plurality of protrusions spaced from each other in a circumferential direction and mounted on the crankshaft, and a crank angle sensor disposed oppositely to the protrusions of the rotor. When the rotating direction of the crankshaft 24 is in a normal direction, a crank angle CA is increased whenever the output pulse of the crank angle sensor is generated. In this case, when the output V of the crank angle sensor is changed stepwisely (arrow W), it is judged that the rotating direction of the crankshaft is reversed in a reverse direction from the normal direction, and the crank angle CA is reduced whenever the output pulse is generated. When an intake tube pressure PM is lowered as a set time tD is elapsed after the sensor output V is changed stepwisely, the previous judgment is decided as an incorrect judgment, and the crank angle CAF when it is assumed that the rotating direction of the crankshaft is not reversed, is set as the crank angle CA.
