This cuttings detector is composed of powdery and granular material detecting sensors S1, S2 arranged on the downstream side of a suction cap 12 and the downstream side of a precleaner 13 of a dust collecting apparatus 11 for collecting cuttings D, to detect the flow of cuttings in a cuttings conveying path, and a determining part for storing beforehand cuttings data corresponding to detected data from the powdery and granular material detecting sensors and comparing the detected data of the powery and granular material detecting sensors in drilling with the cuttings data to determine the discharged state and properties of the cuttings.
