To provide a cyclic amide compound capable of being used for a pharmaceutical which is useful as a cytoprotective agent excellent in inhibiting apoptosis.
This cyclic amide compound is expressed by the general formula (I): A-B-CO2R5 [A is a group selected from the formulae (A-1) to (A-4); B is a 1-10C alkylene or a 3-10C alkenylene; R1 is H, a 1-6C alkyl or an aryl, R2 is H, a 1-6C alkyl, an aryl or hydroxy, provided that R1 and R2 are not allowed to be H at the same time; R3 and R4 are identical to or different from each other, and each H, a 1-6C alkyl, an aralkyl, hydroxy, a 1-6C alkoxy, a halogen, nitro, amino, azido or the like; and R5 is H, a 1-6C alkyl or an aralkyl]. The compound, its pharmaceutically acceptable salt or its optical isomer is used for the pharmaceutical.
