To provide a cylinder injection type spark ignition internal combustion engine capable of forming a strong airflow turning obliquely in a cylinder with a horizontal and a vertical turning velocity component, and maintaining turbulence generated in the cylinder by this airflow upto a compression top dead center.
A fuel injection valve 3 injecting a fuel directly into the cylinder is arranged between an inlet valve and an outlet valve around the upper part of the cylinder. At the time of homogeneous combustion, the fuel F is injected to the outlet valve side of a cylinder bore by the fuel injection valve in the vicinity of an intake bottom dead center, thereby giving the horizontal turning velocity component to a tumble flow T formed in the cylinder in an intake process by the injected fuel, and accelerating the vertical turning velocity component of the tumble flow.
