Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily hydrolyze cellulose acetate as a hardly hydrolyzable substance without deteriorating a natural environment by using a bacterium belonging to the genus Alcaligenes. SOLUTION: This method for hydrolyzing cellulose acetate comprises using a bacterium belong to the genus Alcaligenes, preferably Alcaligenes xylosoxydans (FERM P-15,060). A cellulose acetate to be hydrolyzed has preferably 0.8-2.8 degree of substitution. To be concrete, for example, when the bacterium is cultured in a culture medium obtained by putting a membrane of a cellulose acetate having 1.5-2.5 degree of substitution in a liquid medium containing a cellulose acetate having 2.5 degree of substitution, the membrane of the cellulose acetate having 1.7 degree of substitution shows 33.8% loss in weight and that having 2.5 degree of substitution shows 10.8 weight loss on the 21st day of the culture and the membrane of the cellulose acetate having 1.7 degree of substitution shows 38.7% loss in weight and that having 2.5 degree of substitution shows 26.2 weight loss on the 28th day of the culture.
