PURPOSE: To facilitate the manipulation of an operating lever, in a locking device of an automobile adjustable steering column.

CONSTITUTION: A locking means, locking a steering column to the specified position by joining two side plates of a column support structure together with each other, comprises a tie rod 20 extending between these two side plates, an intermediate support component 25 and an operating component 26 being movable in the axial direction on the tie rod 20. An operating lever 27 connected to the operating component 26 is rotatable in a space between an active position locking the steering column and a backward position releasing the fixation of the steering column. One side of two opposed surfaces between the operating component 26 and the intermediate support component 25 comprises at least one of projecting parts 30 and 31 comprising a rolling bearing component connected to the corresponding locking element.
