To provide a device and a method for setting a target fuel pressure for setting the target fuel pressure so that a fuel amount is not shorted irrespective of the operating conditions of an engine to which a fuel pressurized by a fuel pump driven by the engine is supplied.
This target fuel pressure setting device sets the target fuel pressure of the engine to which the fuel pressurized by the fuel pump driven by the engine is supplied. This method for setting the target fuel pressure comprises the target fuel pressure setting means (step S5) of setting the target fuel pressure according to the operating conditions of the engine and target fuel pressure changing means (steps S1 to S4) for lowering the target fuel pressure when the fuel amount dischargeable from the fuel pump is short of the fuel amount required for the engine under a target fuel pressure.
