NEW MATERIAL:A dibenzo[b,f]thiepin derivative of formula I (R1 is lower alkylene group; R2 and R3 are lower alkyl groups; R4 is H etc.; X is halogen).
EXAMPLE: 2-Hydroxy-8-chloro-10-( 2-dimethylaminoethoxy )-dibenzo[b,f]-thiepin and 2-hydroxy-8-chloro-dibenzo[b,f]thiepin-10(11H)-one.
USE: A medicine having a central nervous system suppressant action.
PROCESS: A compound of formula II (Z is hydroxy-protecting group) is reacted with a reactive derivative of a compound of formula III, e.g. an ester or salt with hydrochloric, sulfuric or methanesulfonic acid, in the presence of a basic condensing agent, e.g. an alkali metal such as Li or Na, to give a compound of formula IV, which is then subjected to elimination of the hydroxyprotecting group if necessary, to form the compound of formula I wherein R4 is H.
