Abstract:

PURPOSE: To contrive the improvement of the melting efficiency of material, prevention of the wear of the peripheral wall of a furnace and the reduction of the size of the furnace body by a method wherein two upper electrodes are provided and an arc is directed from each of them toward the center of a furnace body.
CONSTITUTION: A DC arc furnace is provided with a furnace body 2 having a lower electrode 1 on its bottom part, a furnace cover 3 for closing the upper part of the furnace body 2, two upper electrodes 16 and 17 arranged at a predetermined horizontal space and passing vertically through the furnace cover 3, lifting device 18 and 19 for supporting the upper electrodes 16 and 17 respectively in a vertically movable manner and upper conductors 20 and 21 connected to the upper electrodes 16 and 17 respectively and extending in the directions reverse to the upper electrodes opposite to their respective electrodes 16 and 17. The arc furnace is further provided with two lower conductors 22 and 23 connected to a lower electrode 1 and extending in the same directions as the upper conductors 20 and 21 and electric source circuits 24 and 25 disposed between the extending ends of the upper and lower conductors 20 and 22 and between those of the upper and lower conductors 21 and 23, respectively.
