The display element 2 constituted so that a display color on a display surface side can be changed by moving a conductive liquid 12 inside a space S for display includes: a transmission section 5a which transmits light to a display surface side; a reflection section 5b which reflects the light to the display surface side; a backlight (light source) 16 which is disposed on the non-display surface side of a lower substrate (second substrate) 4; and a lens 10 which is disposed between the lower substrate 4 and the backlight 16. The center of gravity of the transmission section 5a, and the center of the lens 10 are nearly aligned with each other.
