A downward flow liquid film type evaporator 10 includes a heat transfer tube group 30, a refrigerant spray device 50, a gas refrigerant outlet tube 22b, and a cover 60. The heat transfer tube group 30 is constituted by a plurality of heat transfer tubes 30a, 30b, 30c, .... The refrigerant spray device 50 is arranged above the heat transfer tube group 30 and stores liquid refrigerant of supplied vapor-liquid two-phase refrigerant to allow the liquid refrigerant to flow downward. The gas refrigerant outlet tube 22b is positioned above the refrigerant spray device 50, and has discharge port E from which vapor refrigerant evaporated on the surface of the heat transfer tube group 30 is discharged. The cover 60 is located above the refrigerant spray device 50 and covers it. A direct-above space sq5 between the refrigerant spray device 50 and the cover 60 is communicated with a gas channel space sq1 through which the vapor refrigerant is directed to the discharge port E. An edge C2 of the cover 60 in the width direction is positioned inside both end portions C1 of the refrigerant spray device 50 in the width direction in a plan view.
