Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the title elastomer by curing an adduct prepared by reacting an anionic polymer having at least one functional site with a specified sulfoxide compound.
CONSTITUTION: The title elastomer is produced by forming an adduct by reacting an anionic polymer having at least one functional site (e.g. polybutadiene) with about 1 equivalent of a sulfoxide compound of the formula (wherein R1 and R2 are each about 1-20C alkyl, S-substituted alkyl, about 3-20C cycloalkyl, about 6-20C aryl, halo-substituted aryl or about 7-20C aralkyl) and curing this adduct in the presence of a suitable catalyst. This elastomer is compounded and made into a product, such as a tire or a power belt, showing high resiliency, low rolling resistance and low heat buildup when a mechanical stress is exerted on it.
