PURPOSE:To prevent impression of an overvoltage upon a GTO element by detecting the DC voltage of an output of a full-wave rectifying circuit and, in case where the DC voltage exceeds a permissible reference value of overvoltage when the DC voltage is compared with a prefixed set voltage, by making a resistance load consume regenerative electric power. CONSTITUTION:A full-wave rectifying circuit 1 inputs the three-phase terminal voltage of a high voltage absorbing circuit A and outputs a DC voltage. An overvoltage detecting circuit 2 detects the output voltage of the full-wave rectifying circuit 1 and compares the output voltage with a permissible reference value and, when the output voltage exceeds the reference value, outputs a signal to a thyristor gate. A thyristor 4 is switched by means of an output signal from the detecting circuit 2 and the output voltage of the rectifying circuit 1 is made to be consumed by a resistance. By means of this circuit, the thyristor 4 is ignited by means of the voltage rise of a regenerative current absorbing circuit A and the resistance 3 is made to consume a regenerative energy and, as a result, impression of an overvoltage upon a GTO is prevented, when bad contact occurs in main contactors CTTU, CTTV, and CTTW at the time of regenerative braking of a motor.
