To provide an electrochemical type display element having excellent workability, productivity and cost properties, low driving voltage, excellent repetitive driving characteristics and a memory property, wherein it is not needed to consider reactions on a counter electrode side paired with coloring and decoloring reactions on a transparent electrode side in an electrolyte composition.
In the electrochemical type display element wherein a negative electrode gives electrons to metal ions in the electrolyte, the metal ions are reduced and the metal is deposited on the surface of the transparent electrode to color a metal color, on the other hand, the polarity of the electrode is reversed, the negative electrode is converted into a positive electrode, electrons are taken from the metal deposited on the electrode, the metal is oxidized into the metal ions and dissolved in the electrolyte to decolor the metal color, (1) the electrolyte in the display element has bismuth ions as coloring and decoloring metal ions and (2) the counter electrode opposite to a viewing surface of the display element is made of copper.
