To provide a lithium secondary battery, in which a capacity degradation after repeating a charge/discharge can be prevented.
A positive electrode of the lithium secondary battery is structured by using a material selected from the materials where a part of a manganese in a lithium manganate is substituted by another element, and in the material, a value of an electron density of a total overlap in the manganese-oxygen bonding becomes larger than in the case in which no substitution of element occurs. The substituting element is selected from among the group consisting of Sc, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn, whose ionic radii approach the radius of manganese. The characteristic of such substituted lithium manganate itself or the characteristic of the lithium secondary battery, in which the substituted lithium manganate is used as a positive material, is evaluated by the electron density value of the total overlap in the manganese-oxygen bonding.
