To provide a polymer electrolyte membrane of a solid polymer fuel cell and a direct methanol fuel cell, and a polymer electrolyte useful as a binder for a catalyst layer, and provide the polymer electrolyte which is inexpensive, which is hydrocarbon based materials having diversity of a chemical structure, and which has a low water absorption rate and superior proton conductivity.
This polymer electrolyte is a multi-block type whole aromatic polymer electrolyte composed of a segment having a sulfonic acid group and a segment not having the sulfonic acid group. In bivalent coupling groups which exist in repetitive units of the segment having the sulfonic acid group and in which aromatic rings are coupled, the ratio of electron-attracting coupling groups is 20 to 100% and this polymer electrolyte has a microphase separation structure.
