Abstract:

To provide an electromagnetically actuated optical relay which latches by liquid surface tension.

The electromagnetically actuated optical relay is disclosed in which a solid slug moves in a switching channel formed in a relay housing. An optical path passing through the switching channel is blocked or unblocked according to the motion of the solid slug. The motion of the solid slug is controlled by at least two electromagnetic actuator such as an electric coil surrounding the switching channels. The motion of a solid metal is resisted by a liquid such as liquid metal which wets between the slug and at least one fixed contact pad in the switching channel. The surface tension of the liquid provides a latch mechanism for the relay.
