An elevator system 10 includes: a plurality of cars 1a, 1b, 1c disposed in the same hoistway 10a; and drive devices 2a, 2b, 2c installed in each car 1a, 1b, 1c. Distance sensors composed of a light emitting portion 4A and a light receiving portion 4B are provided among the cars 1a, 1b, 1c. The signals from the distance sensors 4A, 4B are input to the control device 5. The control device 5 has an independent operation mode and an interlocking operation mode. In the interlocking operation mode, the control device 5 keeps distances among the car 1a, 1b, 1c constant on the basis of the signals from the distance sensors 4A, 4B.
