Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain low formaldehyde emulsion polymers having excellent adhesion properties and durability, and useful for nonwoven cloths by polymerizing a specific ratio of vinyl acetate to cross-linking monomers in water in the presence of a particular redox initiator system.
CONSTITUTION: Low formaldehyde emulsion polymers are obtained by polymerizing in water (A) more than 50(wt.)% of vinyl acetate and (B) up to 10% of cross-linking monomers of N-methylolacrylamides in the presence of 0.05 to 3% of polymer solids of a hydrophobic hydroperoxide and a redox initiator system using 0.05 to 3% of ascorbic acid.
