An end surface contact type mechanical seal composed so as to shield and seal a sealed fluid area 6 which is an inner peripheral side area of the relative rotation slidable part 3a, 5a and an atmospheric area 7 of the outer peripheral side area by the relative rotational slidable operation provided with a still sealing ring 3 provided in a seal case 2 and a rotary sealing ring 5 provided in a revolving shaft 4, forms an air-cool passage 17 opening in the atmospheric area 7 in the rotary sealing ring 5 in which both end parts 18a, 19a stand in the proximal end surface 5b and an outer peripheral surface 5c of the rotary sealing ring 5, and air-cools the sealing ring 5 by discharging air sucked from the opening part 18a of the proximal end surface 5b from the opening part 19a of the outer peripheral surface 5c by accompanying the rotation of the rotary sealing ring 5.
