PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject device capable of repelling insects from foods, cigarettes or other consumer goods by contacting an insect-repellent composition comprising a repellent compound such as an essential oil, a release control agent and, optionally, a solvent with a basal body so as to enable the controlled release of the above repellent compound. SOLUTION: A precursor mixture is prepared so as to comprise (A) a repellent compound selected from an essential oil and its active ingredient (e.g. wintergreen oil or methyl salicylate as its active ingredient), (B) a release control agent (e. g. latex resin, polyvinyl resin) and (C) optionally, a solvent (e.g. an alcohol) and/or another additive (e.g. coupling agent, dispersant), and then applied to a basal body (e.g. a container); wherein it is preferable that the concentration of the repellent compound in the above precursor mixture is about 0.05-40 wt.%, and that of the repellent compound in the insect repellent composition after applied and dried about 0.1-80 wt.%.
