To provide an exhaust emission control device that suppresses reduction in an NOx purification rate of a catalyst and maintains high purification performance.
An exhaust emission control device includes: a catalyst 9 provided on an exhaust passage 15 of an engine 10 and for storing nitrogen oxides in exhaust under an oxidative atmosphere and reducing them under a reduction atmosphere; and short period control means 5 for performing short period control of periodically changing an air-fuel ratio of exhaust to a rich direction and lean direction. The device also includes recovery control means 6 for performing recovery control of extending the rich period further than in the short period control to periodically change the air-fuel ratio, when a purification rate of the nitrogen oxides in the short period control is less than a predetermined purification rate.
