PURPOSE: To purify exhaust gas at the time of cold starting with a simple system by adsorbing HC in the exhaust gas to an adsorption body at the time of cold starting of an internal combustion engine, and burning it as exhaust gas which has excessive oxygen during desorption process through temperature rise.
CONSTITUTION: An adsorption body and a catalyst body are arranged in an exhaust gas pipe for speedily adsorbing a large amount of HC or the like generated at the time of cold starting. Oxidizing gas is added or oxidization activity of the catalyst body is improved before starting desorption of the HC to obtain the exhaust gas having excessive oxygen. The oxidization activity of the catalyst body is improved for efficiently purifying the HC. Shapes of the adsorption body and catalyst body are not limited, however, a honeycomb structure is preferred. The adsorption body is, for instance, a carrier of Pd-ZSM-5 or Pd- USY, and the catalyst body has a catalyst layer of Al2O3.CeO2 powder which is carrier of Pt or Rd. Exhaust emission control at the time of cold starting, especially, is carried out without a complicated system.
