To provide a technology of optimally controlling addition of a reducing agent, in consideration of the state of adsorption of NH3 on a selective reduction type NOx catalyst, in an exhaust gas purification apparatus of an internal combustion engine.
The state of the adsorption of the NH3 on the selective reduction type NOx catalyst has: a weakly adsorbed state in which the adsorbed NH3 can be used for a reduction reaction of NOx; and a strongly adsorbed state in which the adsorbed NH3 cannot be used for the reduction reaction of the NOx when the state of the adsorption is not changed into the weakly adsorbed state. The exhaust gas purification apparatus comprises: an actual weakly adsorbed amount computing section which computes the actual weakly adsorbed amount of the NH3 absorbed by the selective reduction type NOx catalyst in the weakly adsorbed state; and an addition control section which controls the addition of the reducing agent added by a reducing agent adding section, depending on the actual weakly adsorbed amount computed by the actual weakly adsorbed amount computing section.
