Abstract:
The expansion joint for bridges and similar structures is fitted between the cross member (LRI) of one part of the structure and the cross member (LR2) of the adjoining structure. An intermediate cross-member (L) is mounted in cubic elastomeric blocks (4), which rest on cantilevers (TKI) which project alternately from the two parts of the structure. Relative movement between the cross-members, due to thermal expansion or contraction, is absorbed by shear deformation of the elastomeric blocks. A flexible sealing strip is fitted in the gaps between the cross members. The strip is folded along its centre line as the gap between the cross members is reduced. The elastomeric blocks ensure that the loads are distributed equally over each cross-member.
