PURPOSE: To provide a file management device which can deal with information in a large size as a part of file attributes without deteriorating the retrieval efficiency and read efficiency of the file attributes.

CONSTITUTION: A file attribute processing part 1b judges whether respective pieces of attribute information of the file attributes, which are inputted from the terminal equipments 2a-2c of work stations being clients, are more than a prescribed size or not. When attribute information is judged to be smaller than the prescribed size, the file attributes are stored in a basic attribute file 1f. When attribute information is judged to be the size except for the prescribed size, attribute information is stored in a large attribute file 1g, and address information of the large attribute file 1g is set in the prescribed place of the basic attribute file 1f.
