In the flash lamp 1 having an arc tube 2 in which discharge gas 5 including xenon as a principal component is enclosed, the arc tube 2 is formed with heat-resistant glass capable of shielding ultraviolet rays in the vicinity of 270 nm, pulse light including ultraviolet rays is generated at voltage in a range wherein a potential gradient of the arc tube 2 is 70-150 V/cm per unit light-emitting length, and the pulse light has a peak wavelength within a range of 320-450 nm.
