To obtain a lowly dusting fluoro compound having a perfluorooxyalkyl chain, which is used as a surface modifier desirably used for especially magnetic recording media by selecting a compound having a specified molecular structure.
This compound is compound (a) 9f (b). Compound (a) is represented by the formula (wherein R1 is -XRf [wherein Rf is a perfluorooxyalkyl chain or a perfluoroalkyl chain; and X is OCH2CH2, OCO or the like]; R2 to R6 are each OH, OSO2CH3, OSO2C6H5, OSO2C6H4CH3, OSO2C10H7 or the like; and n+n' is an integer of 6-8). Compound (b) is represented by the formula (wherein R1 is -NH(CH2)3SiZ1Z2Z3, -NHC6 H9(Or3)(CH2)2SiZ1Z2Z3 or the like [wherein R3 is OH, -YRf (wherein Y is OCH2CH2, OCO or the like; and Rf is as defined above); Z1 to Z3 are each CH3, C2H5 or the like]; R2 to R6 are each OH or -YRf; and n+n' is an integer of 6-8).
