To provide a friction material which is obtained by molding a friction material composition of an NAO material comprising a fiber base material, a binder, and a friction adjusting material and containing at least one raw material from which sulfate ions are eluted, and can suppress rust adhesion while securing good abrasion resistance.
A friction material composition contains a hydrophilic activated carbon as a friction adjusting material. The hydrophilic activated carbon is contained at 0.4-5 wt% with respect to the total amount of the friction material composition, and has an average particle diameter of 80-200 μm. A hydrophilic phenol resin is contained as a binder at 8-12 wt% with respect to the total amount of the friction material composition.
