Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a low alkali glass-ceramic product having a high modulus of elasticity and contg. a crystal phase gathered body consisting essentially of uniformly distributed superfine spinel type crystals of uniform size by imparting a specified compsn.
SOLUTION: This glass-ceramic product has about 14×106-24×106psi Young's modulus and >1.0MPa.m1/2 fracture toughness, is formed from a crystal gathered body consisting essentially of spinel type crystals of uniform size uniformly dispersed in a highly siliceous residual glass matrix phase and has a compsn. consisting essentially of, by weight, 35-60% SiO2, 20-35%Al2O3, 0-25% MgO, 0-20% ZnO, 0-20% TiO2, 0-10% ZrO2, 0-2%Li2O and 0-8% NiO (expressed in terms of oxides). The total amt. of MgO and ZnO is at least about 10%, and when the amt. of Al2O3 is about <25%, the total amt. of TiO2, ZrO2 and NiO is ≥5%.
